PROTESTANT TEACHERS SLASHED, GANG RAPED, MOB STILL BOOSTING PEDOPHILES KUALA LUMPUR (July 19): As the nation struggles to cope with the rising incidents of sex crimes against women, Muslim activists and women’s groups are angry at government inaction and trying to take matters into their own hands. More than 100 teachers in Kuala Lumpur have been allegedly attacked by an increasing number of paedophiles after the Education Ministry made the announcement in December last year that Islam’s strict dress code would no longer be enforced in the national education system. But with the majority of the teachers’ unions boycotting the announcement because of the way it was announced, and also the public outcry against the Education Ministry’s decision, the ministry has since backtracked and agreed that teachers should be allowed to wear the hijab. “I think the Public Service Department (PSD) is reluctant to take action against the aggressors because of the sheer number of Muslim teachers in our country. What should we do? What can we do? We cannot abandon our teachers and students as they are already in a state of trauma,” said Zainah Anwar, who teaches at a public school here. Her friend and colleague, Evelyn Mary, 22, agreed, saying the ministry should also understand the trauma teachers were going through. “I think the authorities are not aware of the consequences of the ministry’s announcement. Parents are having sleepless nights and even teachers are having nightmares,” she said. Meanwhile, some families of victims from the ethnic Chinese community have complained that the Protection and Welfare Department has made no official statement on a police report lodged on June 30 with a few concerned locals, and some ethnic Chinese teachers who had complained about being attacked have also been ignored.
