The Book of Amos: Chapter 4
At this point, Israel is revealed to have fully turned from God. And even though God has attempted in various different ways to illustrate to the Israelites on why they should turn back to God they still refuse. Now, we could talk about how horrible the Israelites are for the rest of this devotion, but I want us to talk about our own hearts.
Verses 4 and 5 highlight the heart of the Israelites when it comes to giving tithes and offerings to God. First off, they are giving improper offerings to God that aren’t really a sacrifice for them and are more to make themselves feel better about themselves than to actually give as an act of faith to God. Then, after the fact, they go and brag about how great they are because they are giving to God at all. Let’s take this and evaluate our own heart with it.
When it comes to what we give to God, it is not the dollar amount or what others think about us since we give that matters. What matters is our heart. God would rather receive $1 that is given out of faith and trust than a million dollars that is given with our own self-interest in mind. As I have said before, God does not need our money, he asks us to give out of trust. Evaluate your own heart in this manner. When you give, are you giving out of trust in God or is your heart the same as the Israelites in this manner? Let’s turn to God, not just with our finances, but with our hearts and lives. Because turning to God with our hearts and lives is what truly matters.
