The Book of James Chapter 2 (Part 2)
The second part of Chapter 2 that we are going to be talking about today is verses 14-26. In this section of Scripture James absolutely nails it. This is exactly what we need to hear in our society, there are so many people who claim to be Christians and have faith, but if you examine their life there is absolutely no evidence of their faith outside of them maybe going to church which is a bare minimum. Our faith is not meant to be something that is idle, we are meant to be active. The Christian faith is supposed to be a faith of action. This action does not save us in any way since we are saved by faith alone. However, our salvation and the love that we feel for others because of the love of God empowering us prompts us to do these “works” whether it is feeding the hungry, caring for the sick and poor, or whatever it is that the Holy Spirit prompts us to go and do.
I want you to think of this works vs. faith thing like this; you all know that I love my wife. If I loved her very much yet did nothing to express that love to her then that love would mean nothing because she wouldn’t know! But if I did all sorts of sweet things for her yet felt no love at all those sweet things would also mean nothing! Works by themselves don’t matter, and faith without works is worthless since we are not living out the mission that God has called us to. Instead, our faith in Jesus, our loving people like Jesus loves people is the “why” we do the works.
What are the works that Jesus is calling you to today? What about this week? What are real ways that will make a difference that you can express the love of Jesus for someone today? Don’t hold back or idle. Live your life as faith in action.
